Memory Disorders

When memory lapses interfere with social or work activities, you may need medical care provided by the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s specialized neurological services.

Physicians specializing in memory disorders work with patients and their families to evaluate causes of memory loss and dementia. Dementia is characterized by memory loss, personality changes, and impaired judgment, language, or spatial skills. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, but other conditions also can affect cognitive skills, including strokes, Parkinson’s disease, adult hydrocephalus, nutritional deficiencies, depression, brain infections, or traumatic brain injury.

Early diagnosis and management of these conditions are key to maintaining quality of life. As part of the state’s only academic medical center, UMMC is helping lead the way in new treatments and therapies for these disabling conditions.

  • The MIND Center
    • Clinical care provided through UMMC's neurosciences department is a valuable resource for the Memory Impairment and Neurodegenerative Dementia (MIND) research center at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
    • UMMC and four collaborating U.S. academic medical centers received a $26 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to identify risk factors for Alzheimer's and related forms of cognitive decline.
    • The multiyear study, building on clinical data collected from 16,000 participants over 20 years, is expected to give researchers a window on the early physiological changes that may be associated with the later onset of Alzheimer's disease.
